Gemma Khawaja has a training background in Drama and performance. She works full time as a professional puppeteer and folk singer and also makes puppets too.
Creating artwork has always been a strong feature of Gemma’s life, she has had several exhibitions of large, textile collages and has exhibited work made from paper in both 2D & 3D forms.
Gemma became interested in papercuts through the work of Hans Christian Andersen who, in addition to writing wonderful stories, made beautiful, delicate paper cut outs.
Gemma initially began creating simple papercuts in 2013 to use as artwork for her music albums and her papercut exploration grew from there, often taking inspiration from folklore, myth & folksong but also using nature and other themes as starting points to create colourful, multi layered pieces
