The second of two pieces inspired by night-time, particularly by the idea of a bright flame being an oasis in the dark

This piece appeared in a 2020 exhibition called Hinterland: an exploration of liminal space

Nature, Folklore, dreamworlds, myth, folk song, colour, form, patterns and forces in nature are all key inspirations for pieces in this exhibition collection

Hinterland is an exploration of in-between spaces such as borders, boundaries, shorelines and other such places in nature. The work also explores more abstract ideas of hinterlands, such as areas lying beyond what is visible or known, the blurred lines between folklore, myth and reality, life and death or dream and consciousness

“Here’s to the world, round as a wheel

But the sting of death we all must feel

If life was a thing that money could buy

Then the rich would live and the poor would die

But God in his goodness has ordained it so

That the rich and the poor all together must go

The poor work hard so the rich have money”

“I ween that I hung on the windy tree
Hung there for nights full nine.
With the spear I was wounded,
Offered to Odin
Myself, to myself
On the tree that none may know
From where its roots run”

From the Hávamál collection of Old Norse Poems
Excerpt taken from Rúnatal (Óðin’s Rune Song)

Yggdrasil is inspired by Norse Mythology, particularly the story of how Óðin won the runes

Yggdrasil is an immense mythical tree that plays a central role in Norse mythology, the branches of Yggdrasil extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far away into other locations. Creatures live within Yggdrasil, including the four stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór
